Perhaps it's the sugar in the sauce.

Those numbers are beauties, aren’t they?
They came courtesy of a bowl of chicken teriyaki, which Jack enjoyed for lunch yesterday. The highs started a few hours after lunch and continued through to this morning, despite several correction doses of insulin.
Chicken teriyaki has done this before to Jack. It ranks right up there with pizza and ice cream. It doesn’t have the fat content of pizza and ice cream, but it wreaks havoc on Jack’s blood sugar just the same. Perhaps it’s the sugar in the sauce. Perhaps it’s the bed of rice upon which the chicken sits. Perhaps it’s the combination of sugar and rice. Perhaps it contains more fat than I think it does. Perhaps it’s us with incorrect carb counting.
Whatever it is, it stinks, because Jack loves chicken teriyaki.

UGH. So sorry Heidi...and Jack. We haven't tried Chicken Teriyaki before. I think we will avoid it after reading this ~ LOL.

Hi Heidi, I was going to respond to you via email but your post didn't leave one. Thank you for leaving your comment - It is nice to hear from readers - especially ones like you who have been reading along but haven't commented. You always wonder who is out there reading your story! I especially like hearing from people who know the areas I have been to or live in. It kind of gives you a kindred feeling!

I am loving the Albany area and the beauty all around, I had no idea it was so beautiful here. Everyday when I leave work and head towards home I see the mountains in the distance and think how much I appreciate what I see, right in the city and how even though we are in the city, it doesn't feel like it unless your right in the heart of Albany.

Thanks again for your comment, its nice to put an name to a reader!

Bummer you cant enjoy what you love without chasing numbers! Funny how every food is different for everyone, chicken Teriyaki makes me go low and doesnt affect Maddison at all. WEIRD!

Mmmm....guess you'll have to keep trying :) That's a yummy meal that must be mastered!

We had the same issue when I made coconut rice the other day. Usually Elise eats brown rice with no issues, but I used jasmine rice and 300-city. All freaking night.

You're right, it stinks.

I'm right there with you! Penny's very favorite restaurant is our local Chinese/Japanese buffet, where the child goes through sushi as if she was born to it... and then we spend the next 24 hours chasing high blood sugars. And for some reason, it's not nearly as easy to limit Chinese as it is pizza!

I agree with Wendy...you can master that teriyaki!

You should try making your own sauce with splenda!

But...I say stick with it. You can figure it out!

One day as an adult, he's gonna want it and he'll thank you!!

wow, i've never thought of that being a 'problem' food, but i'm tucking it in the back of my head just in case. hope the numbers are back in range by now. :)

My boys are terrrrriyaki (how they say it) addicts. I bolus a little extra for the sauce. I don't measure it just add about 1/4 to 1/2 a unit. Its too good to not eat!

we have the same trouble and living in the PNW where teriyaki chicken is a must has lead us to battle this one to an inch of life...for Isaac a 20/80 bolus works with the 80 given over 3.5 hrs. If he starts crashing before we don't give fast acting sugar but rather slower ones with fat mixed in (think no sugar added chocolate soy milk, or soy yogurt...ect) This has worked thus far, but sadly has come after many sleepless nights of numbers in the over 200's. I guess it's worth it though as that is a meal the whole family loves :)

I love the simplicity of this post. It tells so much, with imagery alone!

I know sticky rice is 80 grams a cup... or so I've heard. Love Teriyaki Chicken and wouldn't think this would cause such a ruckus... I won't have our DD try it. If your boy loves it, there is no way out of it but to make your own. Use Uncle Bens converted rice with it and I'll bet it will work out. I can't imagine what is in the sauce because those are long acting highs.... Maybe cornstarch?

The *amn rice was getting us every time. Check the Glycemic Index......it was a lifesaver for us. I was SO surprised to hear that certain foods were incredibly high. So for us, if it's high on the GI (70 and above), we double the carbs and it works!. So surprised about- rice, cantelope, watermelon, potatoes, rice cakes and very ripe "medium fruits".
