You know you’re a D mama when...
One of Madeline’s classmates lives in our neighborhood. Today, that classmate came knocking on our door, and Madeline invited her in for a play date.
So this girl walks into our house for the first time, and I realized that roughly 20 used insulin syringes were sitting on the kitchen counter.
I’m wondering what she thought of that!
I'm generally a neat-freak, but the past few days have been jam-packed, and I just hadn't gotten around to them yet. So I ran to the kitchen and cleared them from the counter. If I'd known we were going to have a guest, I would have cleared them before she'd arrived, but I had no idea we'd be hosting a play date today.
This girl doesn’t know that Jack has diabetes.
A pile of syringes would seem strange to a kid, don’t you think?
I wonder what she went home and told her mom and dad! And I wonder whether her mom and dad will let her come over again!

Ha! I would think it would seem a bit odd.
Needles have such an immediate response, you know? They just seem so scary. And, they are such a symbol of diabetes. Yes, wonder what she thought!
Oh the stories that girl and her family will weave at their dinner table!
You might want to shut or blinds and lay low for a couple of days. DHS might be doing some secret surveillance as a result of an anonymous tip ;)
Heidi! You made me laugh! Our crazy world is so normal to us that we forget how others might see it!
We also have needles randomly laying about the house... when we have people over, I wonder the same thing you did!
This made me chuckle too! Please keep us posted on if she ever graces your doorstep again.
so true and funny! definitely wonder what was said in her house afterwards...lol
i have those moments too where i have a random clipped syringe lying around...and i think oh, better dispose of that... its our life lol. poor kid, hope she wasnt worried. i had to laugh, thanks for the post today.
Ha! I know what you mean...I always wonder what Adam's friends think when they see the dresser in his room littered with bloodied test strips, random parts from site changes and the occasional needle.
And thank you SO MUCH for your sweet offer to walk with you on Walk day! We will definitely try and find Jack's Pack that day!!
This totally made me giggle! I've wondered on many occasions what the girls friends must think when they're over playing. We've got a small basket of D supplies on our kitchen counter so they're easy to grab...alcohol swabs, strips, lancets, Tegaderm, extra infusion set, etc. I can only imagine what they go home and say to their parents, lol!
"...yeah, and while we were playing, her mom picked up all the shots that were laying on the counter. There were so many, Mom. Like A HUNDRED needles or something. I've never seen that many shots at once!!!! And the kitchen smelled like bandaids..."
Mmmm...Hmmmmm.........I know the truth ;)
I remember first meeting my new step-sons (they were 3 & 7) and having to take my shot in front of them...it's always shocking when people (especially kids) see syringes outside of the doc's office. So much explanation is needed...and you still feel a bit like a weirdo. Oh well, as you said...we know the truth! :D
this made me smile, I laugh often at how our children are so use to needles and often don't think twice about it then we have guest over and they see us draw up a syringe of insulin and start looking pale...oh, yeah, ummm...this is totally normal at our house, next time we'll for warn you ;)
You'll have to let us know if there were any great stories post visit!
